Seshmew aka John Doggington – from “The Whippet Walk” Video

It all started when Craig Samson sent me The Whippet Walk Video starring John Dogginton and Richie 1250 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S1jv8xFHOY watch it as this link – it’s still available. I asked Craig to do some research for me. Craig contacted Chris at the radio station – read on……………… Hi Craig, Yes, the amazing John Doggington was living in a share house with my good friend and station colleague, Richie 1250, presenter of 'STONE LOVE' 5-7PM FRI. He belongs to his ex house mate, but Richie used to hang out with John a lot, so I've cc'd him here and maybe he can give you some more info, as I have only met John a few times and had some quick chats & pats, but apparently he "digs" my show, so Richie helped him convert his doggie bikkies into AUD $ and signed him up to my show. I'm sure Richie would be glad to give you some further info on the strapping young fellow himself, who thanks to this film clip, is rapidly taking the world by storm! (Understandably so, his performance in the clip is flawless, unlike the bunch of human fodder). Thanks for your interest Craig. Regards,  Chris Neave aka  KEN EAVEL  Then Craig contacted Richie 1250 Hi Richie, is there any chance that we could get any more info on the now famous John Doggington as the Whippet Association would like to do a story in the "Whippet Rag" about his rise to stardom. Cheers, Craig Samson. I contacted Raquel, Seshmew’s owner. Hi Raquel, Craig Samson has been “talking” to Richie about John Doggington, your whippet which we have all viewed now and fallen in love with in the Whippet Walk video.  I am the Secretary of The Whippet Association of Vic. Inc. and love to feature “famous” or “clever” whippets on our website and also in our quarterly newsletter called “The Whippet Rag”.  Check out our website at www.whippetvic.com to see all the great pics and stories and the “things” we do.

Can you please tell me John Doggington’s “Story”?

Hi Rae,

Here are the questions and some other little facts. I should mention 'John Doggington' is actually named Seshmew. John is his nickname, alone side Moo-Moo and Moochy

How did you first come to love whippets? I first saw them when I was living in Berlin, I saw two small silver whippets being walked by their owner. They were still young and extra cute and clumsy and were so striking as I’d never seen the breed before. I’d never had any friends with whippets at the time, and only learned of their fantastic temperament once I got Seshmew.  From whom did you purchase John Doggington? Where did he come from? Seshmew was originally a street dog found in the outer suburbs of Melbourne. He was seen wandering the paddocks of a building development and wasn’t in very good shape. He had some cuts on him, had rocks thrown at him by young children and was literally skin and bones from lack of food. We arranged for the pound to come pick him up and if no one claimed him we wanted to be his owners. So after 2 weeks, he came home to us for just $110. When we first started walking him we had a whippet lover come up and tell us off for the poor state he was in. When we explained how we only recently rescued him they were both happy and sad and gave us tips to fatten him up.

Have you had him since a puppy? Seshmew was about 1 ½ years old when we found him 5 years ago. He is still very much a puppy at heart. How did you train him to be so tolerant of all the singing and dancing in your video clip?  He was amazing, so unfazed by all the noise and action going on. Seshmew doesn’t carry some whippet character traits, he is extremely outgoing, eats everything in sight and is quite independent. Strutting down the street with all that attention was very natural to him. It happens every day!

Tell me any funny things that John Doggington does to make you laugh. When Seshmew gets patted on his bottom he waves his head around the room as though he is wearing virtual reality goggles. He looks very silly.

Some extra little facts about Seshmew Seshmew has quite a prominent internet personality. He was diagnosed with Lupoid Onychodystrophy last year, which is where his nails were breaking constantly. It was quite painful and frustrating for him and us as he was in bandages most of the time but most importantly wasn’t allowed to run. The cost of the biopsy and specialist visits cost around $3000. Furthermore his ongoing medication cost $400 a month and lasted for about 6 months. We arranged a ‘Whippet Aid’ benefit show for him at a local pub and had a BBQ and bands playing, with all proceeds contributing to his treatment which was a huge success. The news of his illness was spread on community radio stations, local print media and some online magazines. As a result many people in the Melbourne music community know of and love Seshmew. He is quite famous.

There is a lady in Adelaide called Lee who makes jumpers especially for Whippets and Greyhounds called Pet Paraphernalia. There are several images of Seshmew modeling her jumpers on their website.

Seshmew is the most accident prone of any dog I’ve known. When we found him on the street, he was starved and had some deep cuts on his rear that still bear the scars. He has survived being hit by a car, eating an entire block of dark chocolate, swallowing poison, the nail disease and 2 dog attacks.
